“DEVIL…. Not Today!” Those were the first words out of my mouth and quiet honestly startled me that my first response was such a fiery one. Then I got real sassy, waved a finger in the air and said it again with some passion… “DEVIL…. NOT TODAY!”
It was a crazy week. We were planning, organizing and ready to launch one of our biggest events of the year (feeding 300 plus people in the park), I was stressed and overwhelmed and my husband just informed me he got some blood work back and it appears he tested positive for Lupus, an autoimmune disease. Normally I would have lost it with fear, worry and doubt. On any other day I would have started to cry and needed a good shopping trip to cheer me up and get my mind off of things. However, this day was different. Instead of being dictated by my surrounding emotions and situation I was filled with faith and perspective that God was for me and the devil was not going to have his victory…not today.
Have you ever just had one of those days?
Those days when you are overwhelmed with bad news and fear.
Those days when you find yourself comparing your life and journey to others.
Those days when it feels you are drowning in a sea of doubt or uncertainty.
We all have those days (eek, months?) and quite honestly sometimes we just need to turn the chatter off… stand up tall… wave a finger in the air (I’m talking with major sass) and say, “DEVIL, NOT TODAY!”
Anytime that your feelings and emotions are being ruled by fear, doubt, comparison or lies you are playing into the devils hand. The devil longs to drag you away from God’s will, away from the call God has for you and far far from hearing His voice.
Remember Adam and Eve in the garden? It all started there! The devil came and convinced Eve (yes, it was the WOMAN who first took a bite) that God didn’t know best and that surely she could eat whatever she wanted (side note, this is literally what happens when I diet)… By causing the woman to doubt God’s word, Satan brought evil into the world. And he hasn't stopped.
The Bible calls him “The father of lies” (John 8:44) and John 10:10 says, “The thief (satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. His job on earth is to whisper lies to you, about your calling, your family, your identity, you name it- he will lie about it and try to steal, destroy and discredit what GOD SAYS. The thing is sometimes those lies really sound true. He uses half truths (maybe an insecurity we have already vocalized or a past failure that he keeps bringing up) and we latch on to those like it's gospel truth and run with it. Some of us are literally living lives through the distorted filter of satan’s false accusations and friend, that is no kind of life.
When I was a kid I would get scared at night after hearing a noise in the house. Instead of running to my parents room or even getting up to turn the light on, I would bury my head under the covers, make myself as small as possible and had the notion that if I couldn’t see the scary thing than the scary thing couldn't see me/get me.
In life the only way to truly defeat the devil is to jump up out of that bed, turn on the light and declare the truth! That the devil is a liar, an accuser, a thief and deceiver. As soon as we expose that rascal for what he really is we begin to get a glimpse of truth in our lives and live in the abundance of that reality. The best way to do this is to have God’s word planted in our heart.
When he lies and says your ‘not enough’ come back with “I am more than a conquered through Jesus who LOVES me!” (Romans 8:37)
When the whisper of shame and accusation of your past come at you stand with some attitude and declare, “Once again God, you will have compassion on me. You will trample my sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!” (Micah 7:19)
When you start to compare and believe the lie that your life isn’t as important as so and so… I declare with gusto, “I am certain that God, who began the good work within me, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Philippians 1:6)
And when you receive news that would normally send you into a downward spiral of fear…shout, “For God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind!” (2 Timothy 1:7)
You see the devil knows if he can keep you locked up in doubt, anger, fear, or comparison then you are not leaning into God’s voice and certainly not living in freedom. Remember that day I was telling you about? The event turned out better than expected and that blood test that came in with bad news? Well, apparently it was a false positive. My husband is completely healthy. Now, what would have happened had I let the devil win that day?
Come on friend. Don’t let one more day go by as you bury your head in the covers. Don’t let another second of your beautiful life be stolen by someone who literally has no truth in him. Stand to your feet, push back those shoulders, get a sassy head bobble and declare, “DEVIL, NOT TODAY!
